Chaos at Howe Community Park Injures Multiple Gunshot Victims in the Arden-Arcade Area of Sacramento

Sacramento County deputies are investigating a shooting incident that took place Saturday evening at Howe Park while authorities were clearing an unlawful assembly of multiple hundreds of people.

What Led to the Shooting

Officers from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office initially responded to the park at approximately 6:30 PM on April 18 after obtaining information of people potentially armed with concealed firearms. Following that, a follow-up call was made mentioning an alleged brawl taking place within the park grounds.

A sheriff's airship scanned the area from the air but came back with no confirmation of a fight. Despite this, it became clear that several hundred individuals had congregated at Howe Park without authorization.

The Dispersal and Shooting

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies worked to disperse the crowd by forming a perimeter and making announcements telling the hundreds present to clear out. Nearly 15 minutes were spent for individuals to vacate.

Just as the crowd began to move that an estimated 20 to 25 shots echoed through the night. The barrage of gunfire caused mass panic. Responding personnel immediately began identifying shooting victims.

Four Victims Hospitalized

Altogether, four victims were found to have been shot. The four individuals — comprising three men and one woman each apparently in their mid to late twenties — were airlifted or driven to nearby hospitals. Medical personnel confirmed that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, one had moderate injuries, and one sustained minor gunshot wounds. Fortunately, all four were in stable condition.

Sacramento Metro Fire provided support and assisted with medical triage those who had been shot on location.

Evidence at the Scene

The center of the incident was confirmed to have unfolded on the Cottage Way corridor close to the Home Depot store at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. CSI personnel discovered more spent casings along Cottage Way. Bullet damage were also found in the metal fencing here bordering the nearby Home Depot. The physical evidence showed that at least one of the shooters had been sending rounds south from Cottage Way in the direction of the Home Depot store. That Home Depot location was secured under a brief lockdown during the incident. Crime scene personnel kept processing evidence through the early morning hours.

Detainees in Solano County

Reports confirmed via scanner audio established that a Kia vehicle was contacted by law enforcement in the Solano County area. Four occupants were taken into custody. Sheriff's units were dispatched to Solano County to bring the suspects back for formal questioning. Surveillance footage showed that two shooters had been involved.
